Comtan

No Prescription

Comtan is prescribed in combination with levodopa; carbidopa therapy to treat Parkinson's disease.

Contraindications

Comtan is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- Liver disease;
- An unusual or allergic reaction to Comtan, other drugs, foods, dyes, or preservatives;
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant;
- Breast-feeding;
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Comtan or any other drugs;
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist what script and nonscript medications you are taking especially ampicillin apomorphine (Zydis) bitolterol (Tornalate) chloramphenicol (AK-Chlor Chloromycetin) cholestyramine (Cholybar Questran Questran Light others) medications that cause drowsiness (including medications for anxiety and sleeping pills) dobutamine (Dobutrex) epinephrine (AsthmaHaler EpiPen Auto-Injector Primatene Mist others) erythromycin (E-Base EES E-Mycin others;
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease or a history of alcoholism;
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding If you become pregnant while taking Comtan call your doctor;
- If you are having surgery including dental surgery tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Comtan;

Interactions

Do not take Comtan with any of the following drugs:
- Isoniazid;
- Drugs called MAO Inhibitors like Nardil, Parnate, Marplan, Eldepryl;
- Procarbazine;
- Ampicillin;
- Apomorphine;
- Bitolterol;
- Cholestyramine;
- Chloramphenicol;
- Dopamine, dobutamine;
- Epinephrine, norepinephrine;
- Erythromycin;
- Isoetharine;
- Isoproterenol;
- Methyldopa;
- Probenecid;
- Rifampicin;

Side Effects

Comtan side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue;
- Confusion;
- Decrease in urination;
- Feeling faint or lightheaded, falls;
- Fever;
- Hallucinations;
- Involuntary muscle movements;
- Sore muscles;
- Stomach pain;
- Vomiting;
- Constipation or diarrhea;
- Drowsiness or fatigue;
- Nausea;
- Upset stomach;
- Dizziness;
- Diarrhea;
- Upset stomach;
- Movements you cannot control;
- Stomach pain;
- Drowsiness;
- Difficulty breathing;
- Hallucinations;
- High fever;
- Confusion;
- Muscle stiffness;
- Weakness with or without a fever;

Dosage

ADULTS

The recommended dose is one 200-mg tablet with each dose of Sinemet, up to a maximum of 8 doses per day. If you were taking more than 800 mg of levodopa per day before starting Comtan, Entacapone, you will probably need a reduction in your levodopa dose once you begin taking the drug.
