Glipizide

Structure

Glipizide Tablets
Each tablet contains Glipizide 5 mg

Glipizide M Tablets
Each tablet contains Glipizide 5 mg, Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg

No Prescription and Dosage

Glipizide is prescribed for the treatment of:

Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus: Start with 2.5 mg/day given 30 mins before breakfast.
Dose may be increased as required over 2-4 weeks upto 20 mg/day given in 2 divided doses 30 mins before breakfast and dinner.
Once glycaemic control is achieved maintenance dose should be given only once a day.
Patients on insulin can be transferred to glipizide; those receiving less than 20 units a day can receive usual doses of glipizide after stopping insulin. In those receiving more than 20 units of insulin, halve the dose and add glipizide at usual doses.
Monitor blood glucose during transition.
Elderly: Start at low doses and build up carefully.
Non insulin dependant diabetes not controlled by monotherapy with glipizide or metformin.
1 tab b.i.d. Maximum 4 tablets/day.

Contraindications

Glipizide is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- Impaired adrenocortical function;
- Juvenile diabetes mellitus;
- Ketoacidosis;
- Lactation;
- Pre-coma & coma;
- Pregnancy;
- Stress;

NIDDM when insulin secretion has been attenuated, severe renal insufficiency.
