Memantine

Contraindications

Memantine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- an unusual or allergic reaction to memantine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives;
- breast-feeding;
- kidney disease;
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant;
- if you are allergic to Memantine;
- if you are allergic to propylene glycol;
- if you have any other allergies;
- if you have certain medical conditions;
- if you have kidney problems;
- if you have recent dietary change (from a high-protein diet to a vegetarian diet);
- if you have severe kidney disease;
- if you have severe liver disease;
- if you have severe urinary tract infections;

No Prescription

Memantine does not cure Alzheimer's disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily functions.
Memantine has the the most benefit for moderate to severe stages of the disease.
Memantine is prescribed to treat dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease.

Do not take Memantine with any of the following drugs:
- acetazolamide;
- amantadine;
- dextromethorphan;
- dofetilide;
- hydrochlorothiazide;
- ketamine;
- methazolamide;
- sodium bicarbonate;
- acetazolamide;
- amantadine;
- carbonic anhydrase inhibitors;
- ketamine;
- methazolamide;
- sodium bicarbonate;

Side Effects

Memantine side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- agitation or a feeling of restlessness;
- confusion;
- constipation;
- dizziness;
- feeling of nausea, upset stomach;
- hallucinations;
- headache;
- shortness of breath;
- skin rash or redness, peeling of skin;

- body aches;

- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat);
